Part of the municipality of María forms an area of the Natural Park which shares its name, and due to its situation on a high plateau, its winters are bitterly cold and snowy and its summers hot but short. At more than a thousand metres of altitude, María offers the visitor spectacular views like its fields of corn, (the area is the biggest producer in the province), which change colour with the seasons. It is without doubt a perfect setting for the traditional religious pilgrimage, the Romería de la Virgen de la Cabeza.

Its famous stuffed pork products add to an interesting heritage which includes the prehistoric cave paintings of the Cave of Haza and the Iberian settlement of El Pasico.

A good example of religious architecture is the parish church of Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación. It is from the 16th century and its Mudejar coffered ceiling, pillared doorway, round arch and its framed Arab arch with a sundial are well worth mentioning. It has a square tower, topped by a wind vane with four bells, and a 19th century clock.
